World Series 08
Well, another World Series has come and gone, all while experiencing the worst TV ratings in the history of Professional Baseball World Series. This year the title went to the Philadelphia Phillies in an extended game 5 after a two day rain delay.
“The Phillies and Rays drew the worst Game 5 television rating in history for Monday night’s 5 1/2-inning suspended game. So far, the television numbers are down 20 percent from the current record low for a full World Series, which was the St. Louis-Detroit series two years ago.” (Philadelphia (AP) 10-29-08)
Too bad neither team, Tampa Bay or Philadelphia, had a national presence with large pockets of fans outside their local areas. Tampa Bay is too new of a team and this was their first run at the World Series. Philadelphia, well few people care about the Phillies except for Philadelphians. Neither team carries the type of clout that accompanies the New York Yankees, Boston Redsocks or Los Angeles Dodgers. Because television stations outside of these teams’ local areas were willing to show coverage of the games, fans sprung up all over the nation! Chicago Cubs games have been aired on WGN since 1948! The Yankee’s, well they’re America’s team and have had wide coverage all over the nation since their inception in 1903. Media has always played a major role in sports, starting with baseball, and on through every major sport in United States history. Not only has the national media brought sports into our living rooms and bedrooms, they’ve also delivered information on every known interest of human kind. Up until the advent of the internet, which really was only a few years ago (available to the general public since 1992) the mainstream media was the only way Americans could receive news and information. We relied heavily on newspapers, newscasters and reporters to “give” us the news and their opinions on world and local events. As the internet has evolved, more and more people can now participate in the “news” and share their thoughts and feelings with the world. This is done through forums, social networking sites and blogs. Blogging is not just a one way street. Readers are also able to leave comments and direct traffic and flow to their favorite blogs. There are blogs covering every area of interest in the world; cultures, food, sports, politics, media, etc.
